You may not know the name of French director Francis Veber, and his comical French comedy “The Dinner Game” (1999), but if you are fond of comedy, you might have seen the films like “Father’s Day” and “Birdcage.” Yes, the last two Hollywood outings are actually remakes of his works, and though not all of his films are masterpieces, “The Closet” alone would create you remember his name. This film is that comical.

Daniel Auteuil is M. Pignon, who has been working for a condom factory as an accountant for 20 years, now he happens to learn that he is going to be fired. Horrified by the news, he thinks of jumping from the window to end himself when an archaic man living in the next room gives a tip; “pretend you’re tickled.” For political reasons (and commercial ones too) the company cannot fire him as they are panicked of being accused of having discriminating attitudes. It succeeds, and M. Pignon is elated … for a while.

Because unexpected things happen like chain reaction; “sexual harrassment” from his magnificent female boss (she has her gain reason), sexual reach from his co-worker and rugby coach (he has his absorb reason, too), and so on. The anecdote goes on with twists and turns, finally leading to the confidence newly established in M. Pignon.

Though the ending is not as sterling as it should be, and some parts are a bit astonishing, the cast is so tall that those flaws are all ignored in the destroy. Daniel Auteuil’s dead-pan humor is always effective, and funniest is his face when he is in a parade wearing a colossal tip of condom on his head. Also funny is Gerard Depardieu, whose character experiences a total transformation.

“The Closet” has some satire on our attitude about sexuality, but it doesn’t preach them. Rather, the film handles them with a lighter tough, which avoids the pitfall of being too sad or philosophical. The fact is, the film is too light for some; and clearly the director hesitates to push some tantalizing points the film presents. But “The Closet” should be about M. Pignon, who, honest like the protagonist of the same name in “The Dinner Game,” is about Mr. Everyman. His trail to a modern life is what we witness, and we savor watching. As such the film succeeds, and it is because of fabulous Daniel Auteuil.

Francis Veber, the King of French Farce, keeps cranking ‘em out at a rate that would boggle even the mind of Georges Feydeau. His latest, “The Closet,” features nebbishy accountant Francois–mocked by his colleagues, abandoned by his wife, dissed by his son and about to be fired–who schemes to support his job by pretending to be tickled. Francois’ delighted psychologist neighbor advises him not to change anything about himself–what will change is other people’s perception of him. That’s not the only thing that changes in Veber’s smoothly written, surefire-as-clockwork farce. Francois’ life ends up changing in unforeseen ways, as do the lives of the people around him–particularly that of Santini, the homophobic personnel manager who must suddenly play up to Francois in order to support his believe job. All sorts of crazy complications ensue, and the denouement is appropriately sunny. “The Closet” won’t change your life, but it will leave you feeling blissful, and you will marvel at the sheer star power lavished on this lightweight legend. Daniel Auteuil and Gerard Depardieu, France’s reply to Kevin Spacey and Robert De Niro, play Francois and Santini; in the supporting cast are Thierry Lhermitte, Michel Aumont and Jean Rochefort, which is roughly equivalent to having Richard Gere, Gene Hackman and Michael Caine in the supporting cast of an English-language movie. These good professionals know exactly what is required of them, and recount it gift-wrapped. As crazed as the comedy gets, it is the collected individual moments that will really leave you rolling in the aisles: whether it’s Auteuil’s sick embarrassment at sitting on a Joyful Pride float wearing a condom hat, or Depardieu’s blissed-out, zombie spy as his world crumbles around him, you know that you are in the hands of master farceurs.

Yesterday, I received my 2 disc edition of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and I looked over the sleeve and it looked nice and got me all angry, reminded me of the G.I. Joe days of when I was a kid watching the cartoon! Then, I later last night attach the second disc in to check out the extras! HA that was a joke! The only extras on this 2 disc is the making of the movie, and the special effects unhurried the scenes thing. Now granted those were frigid, but the only true reason for the second disc is for the digital copy! I honestly believe this movie is not worth [...] at all, maybe 16.99! Vast deal you obtain the digital copy! How many of us out there really expend the digital copy? Where was the deleted and alternate scenes? Is it really coming to the point where things are going to Blu Ray and not to regular dvd which their are a heck of a lot more dvd player owners then blu ray! I say if you are looking at this review on deciding whether to engage the 2 disc, wait till it goes cheaper and acquire it! Don’t use over 10 bucks for it! Thanks for your time I hope this helps!

My husband and I saw this movie tonight on a whim, both of us remembering watching the cartoon from the 1980’s. Now I wasn’t expecting any unbelievable acting or OMG improbable writing, I went to be entertained and I was very entertained by this movie. I liked the Scarlett/Ripcord dynamic, something that has turned out to be somewhat controversial. This is due to the fact that in the cartoon Scarlett was always paired with Duke and with Snake Eyes in the droll. However, the two actors had chemistry, so I liked it.

There were two things however that I had issues with. The first being Veil Girl, she was my fave joe during my childhood and she was a TANKER not an admin/desk jockey. Also, you have no view that it’s her until the kill credits roll around. It would have been nice to know that I had been looking at Veil Girl, instead of wondering if she was in the film. I heard that Lady J was in the movie as well, but I’ll be damned if I could accept her, if she was in it, like Cloak Girl, they never near out and say it. They unprejudiced select that you are psychic and automaticlly know.

The second is Tatum Channing. Dear G-d, that man cannot act, at all, not even a small bit. Considering that he mostly plays off of Marlon Wayns and Sienna Miller, two people who can act… well it becomes painfully and pitifully certain that he is out of his league. Which is REALLY dim to say, considering that this movie is pure escapist, action fluff! While he has the examine of Duke for the most section, the man couldn’t act his intention out of a paper bag if someone held the slay originate for him.

Lastly, Breaker is a Genuine treat. I found myself wanting more scenes with him and eagerly anticipating his lines. Hopefully he’ll catch more of them in the sequel, which is already in development and which all the actors are under contract to be in.

A likable mix of WWII action and light comedy, the first 10 episodes of the NBC series Baa Baa Black Sheep (1976-78) wing their way onto DVD in this double-sided two-disc set. Based on the adventures of Marine Corps pilot Major Gregory “Pappy” Boyington (played in the series by the always dependable Robert Conrad) and his squadron of roguish ace fliers in the South Pacific Theater, Baa Baa Black Sheep benefited from an excellent cast (which included such TV and film vets as Simon Oakland and Dana Elcar, as well as up-and-comers like John Larroqutte and Larry Manetti of Magnum, P.I.) and scripts from series creator Stephen J. Cannell (as well as long-time TV scribes like Philip De Gure and Milt Rosen) that offered a enjoyable balance of humor and combat. The blend gets an excellent showcase in the 1976 two-hour pilot, Flying Misfits, which kicks off volume 1; the remaining 10 adventures pit Pappy and the Black Sheep boys against the Axis Japanese in a secret squadron of captured planes (”The Meatball Circus,” episode 8), a brainwashed American captain (”Presumed Dead,” episode 7), and a tough major (Charles Napier) with designs on commanding the squadron (”Best Three out of Five,” episode 3). Fans of the series may qustion the decision to include only half of the first season’s episodes in this set (the 1976-77 season ran for an additional 12 episodes before being dropped by NBC; the series was revived in late 1977, rechristened Black Sheep Squadron, and ran for an additional 13 episodes before being canceled in 1978), but the inclusion of the two-part pilot and interviews with the real Pappy Boyington (who served as the show’s consultant and even cameos in the pilot) should appease any concerns. –Paul Gaita

See The Berlin Concert - Live from Waldbuhne Online Right Now!

Sparks fly in this video of the all-star concert from Berlin’s equivalent of the Hollywood Bowl in July 2006, part of the World Cup festivities. The electricity is generated by the all-star trio of tenors Placido Domingo and Rolando Villazon and soprano Anna Netrebko in a program of operatic and vocal favorites. The crowd estimated at 20,000 eats it all up, and so will home viewers who’ll relish the prospect of great singers performing great music.

Domingo is his usual self, still remarkable at an age when most tenors have called it quits. He sings with intensity and a voice undimmed by the passing of time. Domingo’s duts with his partners are notable for his acute phrasing, the highlights being the first-act love dut from Verdi’s Otello with Netrebko’s gorgeous lyric Desdemona and the ravishing dut with Villazon from Bizet’s The Pearlfishers, in which he takes on the baritone role. Netrebko seems slightly stiff at first but loosens up as the evening progresses, but she’s in excellent voice, with luminous pianissimos most sopranos wish they could emulate. Her Puccini arias are beautifully sung, and she even offers a Franz Lehar aria and a charmingly accented dut, “Tonight,” from West Side Story with Villazon. But if anyone can be said to steal the show it’s Villazon, a singer in perpetual motion, who brings the house down with a version of Rossini’s La Danza full of dash and brio. There’s a lot more, from Spanish songs to arrangements of the Brindisi from La traviata and Lehar’s <Das Land des Lachelns featuring all three singers, with the tenors dividing their lines between to woo the soprano. These are part of the scintillating encore set–good fun that has the audience panting for more.

Expert accompaniments are by the Orchestra of the Deutschen Opera of Berlin under the baton of conductor Marco Armiliato, who also offers several well-shaped operatic overtures and intermezzos and joins in the fun during the unbuttoned encores. Too bad the video direction doesn’t match the on-stage proceedings. The production team apparently suffers from camera nervosa, the cameras swooping above the scene, then to floor level, now up, now down, now in close-up, now in long shot, searching for novelty while distracting from the music. There are also misjudged cuts, jumps, and angles. This hyperactivity doesn’t seriously mar enjoyment but it is a blemish on a terrific concert. –Dan Davis

Christian Dior really ought to be considered one of the stars of Indiscreet, director Stanley Donen’s consummately glamorous, altogether grown-up love story. The magnificent 1950s “New Look” gowns Dior designed for Ingrid Bergman, herself at the peak of sophistication and loveliness, are a high point of the film’s chic, cosmopolitan mise en scene. Bergman plays Anne Kalman, a celebrated actress who’s “the envy of everyone who knows her,” yet is bored and lonely. Then she meets suave diplomat Philip Adams (Cary Grant), her match in every way: looks, charm, elegance–the works. The electricity is palpable between them and neither makes any attempt to hide that fact. When Anne learns that Philip is an expert on international finance, she’s bold enough to crack: “I’m crazy about hard currency.”

It’s the very maturity of the romance between Anne and Philip that makes this movie so exhilarating, so romantic, and so affecting. When people fall in love at “a certain age” it’s much more poignant; much more is at stake. (The film has a truly surprising plot twist, which throws everything into chaos.) The two “sadder but wiser” stars Bergman and Grant had certainly seen their share of love and heartbreak by this time in their lives, and it shows. (Grant was on the third of his five marriages; Bergman’s career had already survived the scandal of her adulterous affair with Roberto Rossellini.) It’s fascinating to watch them both, knowing what we know of their personal lives: to see Bergman’s Anne throw caution to the wind to commit an “indiscretion” with a married man; to observe Grant/Philip’s distinct ambivalence about the institution of marriage. It’s a case of picture-perfect casting. –Laura Mirsky

Get Chappelle’s Show - Season 1 Online Right Now!

The 2003 debut of Chappelle’s Show on Comedy Central marked a high point for the cable channel, and now the entire, wildly creative first season can be seen, with hundreds of bleeps removed. That’s not to say Chappelle’s Show is perfect entertainment: there are too many moments among the 12 episodes here that descend into pointless scatology and booty fever. But for the most part, Chappelle, a talented comic slowly growing into greatness, is trying to push the sketch-humor envelope and succeeds at surprising us with original concepts and merciless execution.

The merely clever material includes “National Geography’s Third World Girls Gone Wild,” basically an update on those topless-native-women gags of yore, and Chappelle’s “Educated Guss Line,” in which the sage comic eschews psychic powers to logically deduce racial insights from his callers’ qustions. Far more wicked is an in-your-face satire on such autobiographical film fare as Antwone Fisher and 8 Mile, in which Chappelle plays himself ascending from street hustler to rapper-comedian to bona fide savior of America. The best thing here, however, is a parallel-universe version of The Real World, in which the usual racial proportions on MTV’s workhorse series are reversed, thrusting a token white guy into a Hoboken houseful of crazy African Americans. There are also laughs in “Ask a Gay Guy with Mario Cantoned,” as well as a sketch about an “inner-thoughts cam” and a nasty piece about Chappelle’s Make-a-Wish visit to a dying child, which decays into a crul video game competition. Overlooking the series’ weaker material, this is outstanding television comedy. –Tom Keogh

Attempting to do for Westerns what his Guns of Navarone had done for World War II action epics, director J. Lee Thompson crafted Mackenna’s Gold as a lavish, absurdly ambitious variation on Erich Von Stroheim’s Greed, resulting in a last-gasp Western so eager to encompass the genre’s traditions that it turns into a big, silly, wildly entertaining mess. Gregory Peck surely had more serious intentions when he signed on, and he brings prestigious gravitas to his glum role as Marshall Mackenna, who gets shanghaied into searching for the gold-filled canyon of an elusive Apache legend. The rest of the 1969 film labors to undermine Peck’s respectable demeanor; how else to explain Omar Sharif as a Mexican villain, Julie Newmar as a hot-blooded Apache temptress (with underwater nude scenes that were celebrated in Playboy magazine), and a jaw-dropping finale that’s so ridiculous it’s impressive in spite of itself?

Formerly blacklisted screenwriter Carl Foreman and composer Dimitri Tiomkin joined up to coproduce the film, and one can only imagine how Anthony Mann or Howard Hawks might’ve handled Foreman’s sensible script. Thompson goes for scenic splendor, heavy action, and heavier emotions, casting everything at a fever pitch that’s wildly enjoyable without betraying his “serious” intentions. A stable of Hollywood veterans (Eli Wallach, Raymond Massey, Edward G. Robinson, and others) appear in lively supporting roles–they’re all dispatched in a garish Apache ambush–and Camilla Sparv is an ingenu with plenty of fighting attitude. Gold fever reaches its peak, along with some awesome special effects, and divine intervention reaches new heights of intensity. Top it off with Jose Feliciano’s theme song, and you’ll be in zany Western heaven. –Jeff Shannon
